Ah yes the alphabet soup of confused second generation indians -whether American or British, they sure are confused. Suprisingly having spent time in both america and uk i must say the BBCD's (British Born Confused Desi's) are the more confused of the lot!
While ABCDs can be seen in the pre-med classes of college campuses across the US, are generally children of well-off docs and engineers and from the suburbs, BBCD's are more likely to be kids of not so well off parents, live in an urban environment, and fall into two distinct categories. the primary group like their american counterparts listen to rap music, affect a getto black accent and are only willing to spend money alcohol and bling. This lot would give Bappi Laihri a run for his money!
These A/BBCD's never hang out with 1st generation indians or FOB's, refuse to watch Indian movies, listen to Indian music, speak in Indian languages, or eat Indian food. However in spite of this abhorrence of their parents culture, they seem singularly unable to adjust to american/british culture either and often have a huge chip on their shoulder about their 'brownness' and see racism in every wink and shrug!
The 2nd group of BBCD's that i have met in london though was the most surprising yet. These are 2nd gen kids that appear to have come straight out of a fifties indian village! These kids follow an antiquated culture that no longer exists in urban educated india- no intermarriage outside their particular narrow cast band, up to date on all the latest zee news, 25 year olds still performing madhuri dixit numbers at family parties, never leaving home untill married -not even to go to uni! And worst of all really MCP family structures - dad makes all the decision, wives toe the pati parmeshwar line, daughters are expected to learn kathak and make perfectly round rotis and the sons have never entered a kitchen or know the purpose of a washing machine!
Ah well , as a non-veg eating, cocktail downing, professional, single, self-made desi girl, i sure am going to scandalise a few BBCD's! Maybe i should encourage a few of them to visit my home town of mumbai and get a reverse culture shock!
Just to all masala to the wound -
American Born Confused Desi, Emigrated From Gujarat, House In Jersey, Kids Learning Medicine, Now Owning Property, Quite Reasonable Salary, Two Uncles Visiting, White Xenophobia, Yet Zestful
All the same dont take it too seriously after all this is just the opinion of a FOB (Fresh Off the Boat)
